Leadership Training Retreat

Each year the Virginia Chapter invites active volunteers to come together for a Leadership Training retreat. This group usually includes but is not limited to the Chapter Board of Directors, Unit officers, the Newsletter Editor, and the Chapter Administrator. The retreat includes time for volunteers to get to know each other and meet face to face, sometimes for the first time. There is also time allotted for hiking the grounds, bird watching, swimming and quiet meditation.
A Chapter Board meeting is held and all guests are invited to attend. The primary focus of the retreat is leadership training. Different speakers are selected each year to focus on various topics that will help the volunteers become better leaders at the Chapter and Unit levels. The Leadership Training Retreat is offered to Chapter volunteers at no cost.
Accommodations and three meals a day are provided.

“Better Service to Members, Better Member Attendance and Involvement”
Brenda Griffith speaking to 2008 Leadership Conference attendees.
Brenda L. Griffith, a resident of Richmond, has been an AMTA member since 1988. Her list of AMTA service work has been amazing and is a wonderful example of selfless commitment to our profession. As VA Chapter President she was active in supporting the legislative committee that passed the House Bill that brought certification to massage therapy in Virginia. She served as the National President from 2002-2004. She has served on numerous committees both on a chapter level and nationally, including the AMTA Governance Committee, the Planning Committee, and the Performance Review Committee. During the 9/11 crisis, she was part of the Emergency Response Team that provided chair massage to FBI and AFT agents, fire and military personal, and search dogs at the Pentagon.
Brenda helped us to understand our role as volunteers for AMTA both on a unit and chapter level. We explored our expectations both of ourselves and other members. She shared her experience in service work to help us understand how we could provide better service to our members and in turn create greater member attendance and involvement.
At the end of the day, each attendant felt rejuvenated and inspired. We each had new ideas to take back to our units and a renewed excitement about what our units could begin to accomplish. Brenda provided tools for increasing member attendance and involvement and offered herself as a resource for information and a contact to National for any questions we might uncover as we move forward.
