Standing Rule Change

As we approach our next annual conference and business meeting, the Board has made a decision torevise our Standing Rules. Some of the changes are housekeeping changes that will bring us up to datewith AMTA National’s policies but we are looking at changing our Chapter structure. Historically, ourChapter consisted of regional Units. Each Unit had an elected President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Unit President also served on the Chapter Board as well as serving on a local level. As our membership has changed, the unit structure no longer was functional. Over the past five years, all of the Units have become inactive. In the past two years, we have begun to have “Fusion Coffees”.These informal meetings are taking place all over the state and allow members to meet, network, shareinformation, and get news about the Chapter and National. The overall goal of the Coffee Fusion isto develop networks of Virginia members all over the state. With that in mind the following StandingRules changes have been are being considered.

Please take some time to review these changes and give us your feedback, suggestions, and comments. They will be voted on in our next Chapter meeting at the Healing Connections conference on May 6,2012.

Virginia Chapter Moves Towards Licensure

Great News! Our Bill passed both the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate!

We have reached another milestone in our effort to obtain licensure. On February 28th, the Virginia Senate passed our bill with a 34(yea) to 6(nay) vote. In April of 2011, the Chapter Board approved a motion to support a legislative process that will amend the law in which we are “certified” by the Commonwealth. If the new law is passed, all current “certified” massage therapists will become “licensed” by the Commonwealth. We still have a few more steps to take in the process. the Governor will have to sign the bill and we will spend the next year creating the regulations. I would like to thank each and every one of you who helped with this process. Especially to our legislative consultant, Becky Bower-Lanier, our Legislative committee, the people traveled to Richmond to advocate, and to those who called their delegates and senators. Each of you helped to carry this bill successfully through the legislative process. – Beverly Adams, AMTA VA President
